#WolfSportsTVBracket Recap: ‘Game of Thrones’ Crowned Greatest Television Show

Stuck at home with not much to do in many cases, the #WolfSportsTVBracket helped provide some entertainment for fans during the coronavirus pandemic. Given the circumstances, there was no NCAA Tournament this year, but the #WolfSportsTVBracket still ran at the same time as March Madness games would have tipped off if there was a tournament.

The classic HBO series Game of Thrones, which ended last year, topped Breaking Bad by a narrow margin in last night’s title matchup to claim the title of greatest television show in history. Here’s a tournament recap after Game of Thrones emerged victorious out of 68 shows.

The No. 1 seeds were Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, The Wire, and The Sopranos.

The earliest upset was No. 3 seed Mad Men falling to No. 14 seed Arrested Development in the first round by a single vote. But the closest first-round matchups ended in ties: No. 5 seed Peaky Blinders vs. No. 12 seed Ozark and No. 6 seed Dragon Ball Z vs. No. 11 seed Black Mirror, with Peaky Blinders and DBZ advancing on the higher seed tiebreaker (Ozark would have been a higher seed if Season 3 came out earlier).

Another notable Round 1 outcome was No. 6 seed Batman: The Animated Series losing to No. 11 seed The X-Files, as Batman-themed participants performed exceptionally well in past brackets. The seemingly-annual No. 12 seed victory in the first-round came with Friday Night Lights topping Chernobyl.

From the start, Game of Thrones looked like a powerhouse, leading Round 1 in vote percentage.

In a Round 2 matchup of double-digit seeds, No. 14 seed Arrested Development beat No. 11 seed The X-Files to advance to the Supreme Sixteen. Also, Friday Night Lights continued on as a No. 12 seed after a convincing 66.0% win over No. 4 seed The Twilight Zone.

One of the most stunning upsets was No. 2 Friends going down to No. 7 seed Rick and Morty on a last-second vote:

Two more three seeds went down, too, as No. 6 seed The Simpsons defeated Better Call Saul and No. 6 seed South Park eliminated Sons of Anarchy.

After the first weekend, Game of Thrones was firmly established as the #WolfSportsTVBracket favorite as the only show to get over 90% of the vote in each of the first two rounds.

By the Supreme Sixteen, No. 2 seed Seinfeld was looking like a major player that could be a threat to Thrones, as the classic comedy routed Cinderella Arrested Development to advance for a matchup with the top overall seed with a First-class Four trip on the line. It was all chalk in the Supreme Sixteen, as all the better seeds won to advance.

The second weekend heated up on Saturday and Sunday in the regional championships. The first two No. 1 seeds went down, as The Sopranos and The Wire fell to The Simpsons and The Office.

In between, Breaking Bad nearly doubled It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s vote to clinch a First-class Four spot as a No. 1 seed.

And Game of Thrones was challenged more than it had been, but it was able to get past a competitive Seinfeld without much of an issue.

So the First-class Four was set, and it was a great group made up of one of HBO’s crown jewel Game of Thrones; the highly-acclaimed Breaking Bad; beloved comedy The Office; and the longest-running primetime scripted series in history, The Simpsons.

Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones advanced, with the latter entrenched as the slight favorite heading into the final after receiving a higher percentage and turnout in the semifinal round.

The championship lived up to the hype, and there were many lead changes over the course of the two-and-a-half-hour vote, but Game of Thrones took a slight lead in the final frame and held strong in the final few minutes.

Considering the deafening displeasure with its final season, it’s interesting that Game of Thrones was clearly the most dominant series and was able to defeat Breaking Bad to claim the title of greatest show ever. Perhaps it’s an indication that while Season 8 of Thrones undoubtedly had its share of loud critics online, the majority of fans loved the show’s ending.

The TV bracket was our fourth annual fan-vote bracket on Twitter, with Batman (Hero), Joker (Villain), and The Dark Knight (Movie) winning the previous three years.
