Week 5 Fantasy Football Awards 2020

Team of the Week

QB: Patrick Mahomes

There haven’t been any 30-point performances by a quarterback so far this week (although all four guys yet to play have the upside for it), so Mahomes gets the nod here with 340 passing yards and three total touchdowns in a shootout loss to Las Vegas. Some plays were even left on the field for one reason or another, but fantasy owners will certainly take the 29.7 fantasy points in Week 5.

RB: Mike Davis

Running back is another position that didn’t have any monster outings on Sunday, but Davis again proved to be a very capable stand-in for Christian McCaffrey, rushing 16 times for 89 yards and adding a 9/60/1 receiving line on ten targets. Next week, Davis will get a shot at a Chicago team that gave him just 11 carries before releasing him in 2019.

RB: Todd Gurley

Gurley followed up a two-touchdown performance last Monday night with his first 100-yard rushing game as a Falcon, and he looked really good overall—totaling 150 yards and a score on 18 touches. The most impressive part of Gurley’s start to the year is that he’s produced big numbers despite an 0-5 start for Atlanta.

WR: Chase Claypool

Claypool apparently wasn’t supposed to be a significant part of the game plan on Sunday, but that changed after Diontae Johnson (back) went down, and the rookie exploded with seven receptions for 110 yards and three touchdowns, also adding another score on the ground. Simply put, the Eagles had absolutely no answers for the rookie.

WR: Brandin Cooks

Although most hopped off the Cooks bandwagon last week when he didn’t catch a pass despite a season-high 94% of the offensive snaps played, the veteran bounced back in Week 5 by having one of the best games of his career (8/161/1 on 12 targets). If Houston is going to completely turn the season around, Cooks should be featured on a weekly basis.

TE: Travis Kelce

Kelce took blame for Kansas City’s loss this week, but fantasy owners can’t complain about the overall TE1 showing, which came in his first 100-yard game of the year. Some have surprisingly been vocal about Kelce being a fantasy disappointment this year, but through five games, he’s gone for lines of 6/50/1, 9/90/1, 6/87, 3/70, and yesterday’s 8/108/1.

FLEX: D.K. Metcalf

Speaking of stat lines through five weeks, Metcalf has 92+ yards in every game, and Sunday night was his best outing to date not only because of the numbers (six receptions for 93 yards and two touchdowns), but also because of the impact (game-winning touchdown in a 27-26 victory). With the top four wideouts entering the year banged all banged up, you could make a real case for Metcalf as the WR1.

D/ST: Ravens

Baltimore’s defense was dominant against the Bengals—as expected—sacking Joe Burrow seven times and holding him to 183 yards passing with zero touchdowns and two forced turnovers. The biggest play in the 27-3 win was a 53-yard fumble recovery for a score by rookie linebacker Patrick Queen in the fourth quarter.

K: Graham Gano

Gano made all four of his field goal attempts on Sunday, and he became the first player in franchise history (Super Bowl era) to nail three kicks of 50+ yards in a single game. We’ll see if Gano—who has made all ten field goals over the past three weeks—can stay hot next week against Washington.

Surprise of the Week: Travis Fulgham

A breakout game for Chase Claypool in the same game probably overshadows Fulgham some, but he was Philadelphia’s best player in Week 5, catching ten passes for 152 yards and a touchdown. Even when everyone returns from injury, the chemistry shown with Carson Wentz should make Fulgham a weekly factor.

Disappointment of the Week: Zach Ertz

Ertz used to be the target Wentz would lock onto, but he caught just one pass for six yards against Pittsburgh, and he’s now totaled five receptions for 15 scoreless yards in the last two games. The 29-year-old tight end clearly stands out among a group of several disappointments yesterday.

Rookie of the Week: Chase Claypool

The combination of size and speed of the rookie was too much for a Philadelphia defense that has struggled against that combination in the past, and Claypool doing damage in a variety of ways speaks to his versatility. The Notre Dame product will have some quiet weeks on a loaded offense, but Pittsburgh is the perfect spot for his long-term outlook.

Week 5 MVP: Chase Claypool

For those who haven’t actually watched Claypool’s Week 5 performance:
