2020 Heisman Watch (Week 11)

How far do Trevor Lawrence—despite not playing—and Travis Etienne fall in the Heisman race with Clemson is no longer ranked No. 1?

1. Mac Jones | Alabama QB | Senior | Last week: 1

Mac Jones was off last week, but his standing in the Heisman Trophy race arguably got stronger following Clemson’s loss. Still, there are many worthy candidates this year, and Jones will look to keep his stellar play going in a rivalry game versus LSU this Saturday.

Season stats:

78.5% | 2,196 PASS YDS | 16 PASS TD | 2 INT

18 CAR | -9 RUSH YDS | 1 RUSH TD | -0.5 AVG

2. Justin Fields | Ohio State QB | Junior | Last week: 5 (+3)

Through three games, Justin Fields has as many touchdown passes as incompletions, and it’s not crazy to think he might be able to keep up a similar mark throughout the regular season—in which case, it’ll be difficult to not vote for him as the Heisman winner. Fields is completing 86.7% of his passes while averaging 10.9 yards per attempt.

Season stats:

86.7% | 908 PASS YDS | 11 TD

27 CAR | 57 RUSH YDS | 2 RUSH TD | 2.1 AVG

3. Najee Harris | Alabama RB | Senior | Last week: 4 (+1)

Like teammate Mac Jones, Najee Harris also probably gained some ground despite not playing last week while the Crimson Tide was on a bye. There are a few notable running backs that could be in the mix, but Harris is probably the top contender at his position in the Heisman race while playing for the No. 1 team in the country.

Season stats:

124 CAR | 714 RUSH YDS | 14 RUSH TD | 5.8 AVG

20 REC | 183 REC YDS | 9.2 AVG

4. Trevor Lawrence | Clemson QB | Junior | Last week: 3 (-1)

Trevor Lawrence’s fall down in the Heisman rankings over the past couple of weeks was basically out of his control, as he was not allowed to play for the Tigers due to COVID-19. Lawrence will almost certainly be back in a couple of weeks when Clemson returns from a bye week, and there’s still plenty of football in front of him this season. Teammate Travis Etienne is still a strong candidate but drops out of the top five after Notre Dame shut down Clemson’s rushing attack last week.

Season stats:

70.7% | 1,833 PASS YDS | 17 PASS TD | 2 INT

29 CAR | 71 RUSH YDS | 4 RUSH TD | 2.4 AVG

5. Zach Wilson | BYU QB | Junior | Last week: NR

Zach Wilson jumps back into the top five after BYU’s demolition of Boise State last Friday night—and don’t discount the media hype helping the star quarterback in the Heisman race. People love Wilson’s style of play, and things have a way of snowballing if and when groupthink kicks in and people decide someone should be the Heisman favorite.

Season stats:

75.0% | 2,511 PASS YDS | 21 PASS TD | 2 INT

50 CAR | 158 RUSH YDS | 8 RUSH TD | 3.2 AVG

Just missed:

Clemson RB Travis Etienne

Florida QB Kyle Trask

Alabama WR DeVonta Smith
