Strengths

Versatile interior defender with a quick first step. Long frame. Uses length and strength to keep blockers off. Violent and effective hands. Can get skinny to shoot gaps. Good initial push as a penetrator and closing burst as a finisher. Has an assortment of moves to get to the quarterback. Strikes accurately on rip moves. Spin move is efficient and can catch blockers by surprise. Hustles to get in on downfield tackles. Looks like a much better athlete on tape than the Combine numbers suggest. Could likely handle duties as a 4-3 base defensive end on early downs. Scored two touchdowns for Ohio State in 2018.

Weaknesses

Can be moved off the ball if blockers get to his frame. Has some trouble breaking down in space. Shouldn’t be used as a two-gapper. Too easily sealed against the run. Athleticism called into question based on Combine numbers.

NFL comparison

Malik Jackson – While Jackson tested better than Dre’Mont Jones and has two inches on him, both guys have the exact same arm length and—more importantly—similar games as versatile interior players.

Conclusion

Overall, Dre’Mont Jones is a upfield, penetrating defensive lineman that can live in the backfield, so I think it would be a big mistake to throw out the tape and downgrade him based on the athletic testing; for me, Jones is a borderline first-round prospect that would fit well with a team like the Colts or Patriots.
