Strengths
Good overall size and quality length. Strong, compact torso. Thick lower body. Quality technique at tackle. Hands are ready to strike. Does a good job extending to reach potential tacklers. Nasty competitor that plays through the whistle. Enjoys bullying smaller defenders. Seals in the running game. Seeks work at the second level. Can lead the way as a puller. Fairly smooth dropping in pass protection. Keeps a solid base. Uses length to guide edge rushers past the quarterback. Has experience at both right tackle and center. Should be able to easily play guard. Team leader.
Weaknesses
More of a sealer than a driver. Average athleticism. Feet and reaction time can be a little slow. Will likely struggle with speed/quickness on the edge. Sometimes misses his target in space.
NFL comparison
Bryan Bulaga – This would be a different comp if Dalton Risner was definitely kicking inside, but like Bulaga, I think he can stay at right tackle and be a solid contributor both in the running game and as a pass blocker.
Conclusion
Overall, Dalton Risner has the makings of an above-average right tackle that can also play guard or center at a high level. His leadership skills, on-field demeanor, and versatility should make Risner worthy of a top-50 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.
It’s good to learn about guys like this ahead of the draft.
