Strengths

Cannon-armed quarterback with prototypical size. Quick release with the ability to throw from different arm angles and various platforms. Stands tall and has active feet in the pocket as he scans the field. Works through progressions. Throws with touch when he needs to. Hits receivers in stride on downfield passes. Generally accurate when he has a clean pocket. Quality ball placement on intermediate strikes. Very good overall athlete as a former standout basketball star. Can make off-schedule plays. Has the speed to do damage as a scrambler or by keeping it on zone reads. Confident and experienced.

Weaknesses

Accuracy is very inconsistent. Footwork needs significant improvement. Can get lazy by relying on arm talent rather than squaring things up and making the throw. Not always on time anticipating the open receiver. Poor ball security and awareness in the pocket. Too many interceptions. Struggles against pressure. Wasn’t great against top competition.

NFL comparison

Jay Cutler – I don’t think Drew Lock has the pure arm talent that Cutler did, but both have a similar play style as big-armed quarterbacks that can make a “wow” throw on one play and then a head-scratching throw on the next.

Conclusion

Overall, Drew Lock is certainly a gifted signal-caller, but I think it would be a significant gamble to take him in the first round—let alone as a top-ten pick that many project him to be. The best-case scenario for Lock’s career may end up being a fall to Day 2 where he doesn’t have the pressure to immediately contribute.
