Strengths

High-level technician. Feet, hips, and hands are all in sync. Plays with tremendous overall balance. Extremely smooth and poised in pass sets. Keeps a very balanced base on kick slides and covers ground on shuffles to make up for potential size/length concerns. Impressive athleticism to open up when needed against pure speed rushes. Ideal hand positioning in pass protection. Has shown a quick inside set counter when anticipating the inside move. Powerful anchor versus bull rushes. Excellent overall awareness and reaction time. Very quick off the ball. Stays low and creates easy leverage at the point of attack. Hands are quick and strong. Outstanding ability to square his shoulders. Gets his body in position to shield off defenders. Able to engage and seal/turn in the running game. Great feet and overall movement skills. Light mover with natural athleticism. Plus acceleration to the second level. Shows willingness to drive through the whistle. Started at both left and right tackle. Has the skillset to be an elite guard for a zone-blocking team.

Weaknesses

Below-average overall size for an offensive tackle. Susceptible to inside crashes. Not much of a mauler and needs to win with technique. Will hold at times with too much wrap-around hand placement.

Conclusion

Overall, Slater is a very technical offensive lineman that makes the absolute most out of his skillset as both a pass blocker and run blocker. While he gets the job done more than he dominates, Slater’s effectiveness and intelligence should allow him to stay outside in any scheme, and certain teams could look to him as a premium answer at guard.
