Strengths

Very smooth movement skills. Great speed and acceleration. Quality overall size and strength for an athletic linebacker. Very quick reaction time. Exceptional overall pursuit. Aggressive getting in on tackles. Wraps up and runs through ball-carriers. Will stick his nose in the hole to meet a runner. Good ability to side-step blocks. Very comfortable in the backpedal. Shows tremendous upside as a cover linebacker. Excellent feel/anticipation with production as a blitzer. Terrific closing burst. Breaks down well in space. Will go for strips. Outstanding as a quarterback spy. Has experience rushing/blitzing off the edge. Played middle and outside linebacker. Former college quarterback with high football intelligence (made seven starts as a redshirt freshman).

Weaknesses

Play recognition can be a step slow. Slow to diagnose screen passes. Can have trouble finding the ball versus play action. Struggles to get off blocks when engaged. Really allowed the offensive line to reach him and drive versus Virginia Tech.

Conclusion

Overall, Surratt is a smooth, all-around linebacker that will only continue to improve with more experience at the position. The immediate production at North Carolina as a converted quarterback (206 tackles and 12.5 sacks in 24 games) bodes well for Surratt’s chances of NFL success.
