Receivers With The Best Chance At 2,000 Receiving Yards In 2020

After going over the runners with the best chance to hit 2,000 rushing yards last week, we’re moving to wide receivers today. Unlike the 2K rushing milestone, there has never been a 2,000-yard receiver in NFL history; but it’s likely to happen at some point (especially with 17-game seasons on the horizon). These five perimeter weapons have the best chance to hit 2,000 receiving yards in 2020.

 

5. Chris Godwin

There are many mouths to feed in Tampa Bay’s offense, so it’ll likely be tough for Chris Godwin to get enough work on offense to hit 2,000 receiving yards. However, Godwin averaged 11.0 yards per target last season, and he’s set to get an upgrade at quarterback play with six-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady under center—there were a number of times last year when Jameis Winston missed Godwin for big-play opportunities. Granted, Winston was unafraid to take chances when he did let it rip to Godwin, but it feels like Brady is going to want to throw the ball around and show he can still sling it with the best of them. It’s unlikely, but if Godwin can somehow get into the 175-target range, he’d have a shot at 2,000 yards.

 

4. Davante Adams

Aaron Rodgers has made it clear that he wants to get the ball to Davante Adams about as much as possible, and that desire might be further intensified after the Packers didn’t do as well as some thought they could have in terms of putting weapons around the quarterback this offseason. Hurting Adams is that his career high yards per reception is 13.3, and he would need over 150 receptions at that mark to hit 2,000 receiving yards. But the former second-round pick does have the explosiveness to make more plays down the field, and he’s a good pick to be among the NFL’s leaders in targets this season.

 

3. Michael Thomas

Sticking with high volume, Saints receiver Michael Thomas gets so many looks on offense (185 targets last season) that it’s become a joke on social media. However, while people rip Thomas for running a bunch of short routes and benefitting by playing with a quarterback that puts the ball right on the money nearly every time in Drew Brees, he still led the league in receiving with 1,725 yards in 2019 and could push closer to 2,000 by getting his yards per reception higher than 11.6. Keep in mind that the Saints added Emmanuel Sanders and should have Jared Cook and Alvin Kamara healthy for the entire season, but perhaps that’ll lead to Thomas getting more opportunities down the field.

 

2. Tyreek Hill

The top two stand out above the rest as players that could potentially push for 2,000 receiving yards this season. For Tyreek Hill, it comes down to his sheer explosiveness and the quarterback that he plays with. Patrick Mahomes can hit Hill from anywhere on the field, and the duo can pick up yardage totals of 30, 40, and 50+ in an instant, which can help quickly eat into the 2,000-yard mark. Furthermore, the Chiefs have the pieces in place to open their offense up even more and throw the ball around even more than they have in the past two seasons. Hill would need to hit the most home-run plays of his career to average closer to 20.0 yards per reception while topping 100 receptions—it’ll be very difficult, but Hill is the guy that could hit 2K without catching 120+ passes.

 

1. Julio Jones

Julio Jones might be the most dominant player in football (or at least the most dominant non-quarterback offensive player), and he’s the receiver in the league with the best chance to break 2,000 receiving yards in 2020. The All-Pro wideout averages by far the most yards per game in NFL history (96.2), and he has a 300-yard game under his belt, so he can take over like no other at his position. Tight end Austin Hooper, who left the Falcons during free agency, vacates 97 targets, and Julio could get back closer to the 200-target range (accomplished once in 2015 when he had 1,871 yards). If someone is going to hit 2K this year, Jones is the best bet.
