Sam Darnold | Panthers QB

The Panthers have traded for Sam Darnold.

New York will reportedly receive just a sixth-round pick this year, but a second-round pick and fourth-round pick in 2022—which is a decent haul considering the league believes the Jets are locked onto BYU quarterback Zach Wilson with the No. 2 overall pick. While Darnold didn't have a ton of success in a difficult spot to start his career, he's undoubtedly shown flashes of the talent that made him a top-three pick in 2018, and Carolina is an excellent landing spot. This trade takes the Panthers out of the running for a quarterback later this month, and it's notable that Darnold won't turn 24 until the summer; his dynasty arrow is pointing straight up as the hopeful quarterback of the future for Matt Rhule.

Sam Darnold | Panthers QB

Sam Darnold (shoulder) will start in Week 12.

Joe Flacco has played very well for New York, but the team is understandably going back to the former No. 3 overall pick now that he's healthy, and the final six games could be important for evaluating him. Darnold isn't a highly recommended fantasy option against a Miami team that shut out the Jets earlier this year.

Sam Darnold | Panthers QB

Sam Darnold (shoulder) will not play in Week 11.

Joe Flacco will draw another start, and he might be worth considering as a streamer against the Chargers with the underrated receiving corps all healthy coming out of the bye. In his last start, Flacco was excellent on Monday Night Football with 262 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception in a near win over the Patriots. New York is still looking for their first win of the year.

Sam Darnold | Panthers QB

Sam Darnold (shoulder) is officially inactive for Week 9.

This was fully expected after Darnold was listed as doubtful on Saturday. Former Super Bowl MVP Joe Flacco will be under center for the Jets tonight against the Patriots.

Sam Darnold | Panthers QB

Sam Darnold (shoulder) is not expected to play on Monday night.

Jets head coach Adam Gase is calling Darnold doubtful to face the Patriots in Week 9, so it looks like it'll be Joe Flacco under center again. It's very unfortunate that Darnold has been unable to stay healthy, especially in a critical season for his standing in New York.

Sam Darnold | Panthers QB

Sam Darnold (shoulder) is expected to start in Week 7.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero says Darnold is expected to start "barring a setback" during practice today, so it looks like the former No. 3 overall pick will be back for the Jets after missing the past two games with his right shoulder injury. With New York likely to get a very high pick in this year's draft, Darnold is facing a critical stretch over the final ten games of the season.

Sam Darnold | Panthers QB

Sam Darnold (shoulder) will be limited in today's practice.

This is a good sign as Darnold looks to make his return to the lineup, but ideally he'll be able to get up to a full practice by tomorrow or Friday.

Sam Darnold | Panthers QB

Sam Darnold (shoulder) is out for Week 6.

This is Darnold's second consecutive missed game with his right shoulder injury. Veteran Joe Flacco will again start for the Jets this Sunday versus the Dolphins.

Sam Darnold | Panthers QB

Sam Darnold (shoulder) is not expected to start in Week 5.

Darnold is unable to practice fully while dealing with the right shoulder injury suffered last Thursday night, so it appears the Jets are going with Joe Flacco as the starting quarterback this Sunday against the Cardinals. Darnold has unfortunately had some bad luck staying on the field early in his career, and hopefully this isn't a lengthy absence for a young quarterback in a key season.

Sam Darnold | Panthers QB

Sam Darnold (shoulder) has returned for the Jets.

This is a pleasant surprise. After Darnold went to the locker room in obvious pain, it appears he may have gotten a quick X-ray that checked out fine. He's back in the game for Joe Flacco in middle of a second-quarter series after missing several plays.

Sam Darnold | Panthers QB

Sam Darnold leaves game with apparent shoulder injury.

Darnold was thrown down on a sack and his right throwing arm side hit the turf extremely hard. FOX announcer Troy Aikman, who broke his collarbone during his career and says he knows what it feels like, speculates that it might be a broken collarbone for Darnold. Regardless, former Super Bowl MVP Joe Flacco is now in the game for the Jets, and it doesn't look likely that Darnold will return. Before leaving, Darnold was 6/8 for 51 yards along with three carries for 57 yards including an excellent and shocking 46-yard touchdown run.

Sam Darnold | Panthers QB

Sam Darnold struggles against the Dolphins in Week 9.

Darnold was 27/39 for 260 yards, one touchdown, and one interception in the Jets' loss at Miami, giving the Dolphins their first victory of the season. The Jets started the game well with a first-quarter touchdown, but things went south from there, and Darnold and the offense struggled throughout the rest of the contest. The worst play was down in the red zone, when Darnold was under pressure and tried to make a play by basically back-handing a pass to the goal line, which was intercepted. There was the thought that the promising stretch on paper for Darnold would make him a strong fantasy option over the next few weeks, but the Jets simply are not playing well; it's difficult to trust the second-year quarterback in fantasy lineups.

Sam Darnold | Panthers QB

Sam Darnold plays well in return from mono.

In his first game back after missing the last three games, Darnold led the Jets to an upset home win over the Cowboys. Darnold was 23/32 for 338 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception, as the New York offense looked a lot different with their franchise player at quarterback. There were guys running wide open at times against a Dallas defense that struggled, but Darnold looked comfortable and sharp in Adam Gase's offense. Darnold isn't immediately a strong QB1 fantasy option (especially in Week 7 against the Patriots), but his presence is clearly a boost for the entire Jets offense.

Sam Darnold | Panthers QB

Sam Darnold has been cleared to play, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

After missing the last three games while dealing with mono, Darnold is ready to go for the Jets. The hope was that Darnold was going to be ready to play last week at Philadelphia, but his spleen was still enlarged and he did not gain medical clearance. The second-year quarterback will be under center this Saturday against the Cowboys, and his presence is a big boost for the 0-4 Jets. Darnold is not a highly recommended QB1 pickup quite yet, but Le'Veon Bell, Jamison Crowder, and company get a boost with the return of their starting quarterback. The Jets also get tight end Chris Herndon back from his four-game suspension this week, so Adam Gase's offense could look a lot different moving forward.

Sam Darnold | Panthers QB

The Jets have ruled out Sam Darnold (mono) for Week 5.

An enlarged spleen puts Darnold in serious danger if he were to get hit, so New York is obviously making the right move by holding him out another week. Luke Falk will make another start, and hopefully the bye week will have him better prepared at the controls. Still, Falk won't be a recommended fantasy option despite an excellent matchup against Philly.

Sam Darnold | Panthers QB

Sam Darnold (mono) is targeting a Week 5 return.

Darnold is back in the Jets building and is feeling better, but he's still not allowed to workout because of the risk associated with it. However, he said on ESPN's The Michael Kay Show last night that "the goal is to be back against Philly in Week 5," adding that it's his goal and what the doctors are estimating. While Darnold won't be cleared to practice or play until the doctors deem it completely safe for him, Week 5 looks like a realistic return date, and it'd be at a good time, as Darnold would only miss two games thanks to the Jets' Week 4 bye.

Sam Darnold | Panthers QB

Sam Darnold will miss Week 2 with mono.

Jets head coach Adam Gase says Darnold could miss several weeks with the ailment. Darnold was said to be sick yesterday, but the thought was that it was just a temporary thing that didn't put him in danger for Monday night against the Browns. Trevor Siemian will now step in as the starting quarterback for the Jets, and this is a major blow to the team in real life along with a likely negative impact on the fantasy relevant players for New York, like Le'Veon Bell and Robby Anderson. There's the chance Bell is just fed the ball and performs anyway, but he should probably be downgraded slightly for now. Hopefully Darnold is feeling better and can get back on the field soon.

Sam Darnold | Panthers QB

The Jets have officially hired Adam Gase as their head coach.

It took a couple of days for the announcement, but the hiring is now official. This is very interesting as Gase remains in the AFC East and joins a team he was 5-1 against as the head coach of the Dolphins the past three seasons. Super Bowl-winning coach Mike McCarthy was still available and was said to be considered for the job, but Gase should be an excellent hire as a bright offensive mind that has many people in his corner including future Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning. The hiring of Gase is great news for young quarterback Sam Darnold, who has a very bright future after showing major flashes to end his rookie season, and it’s probably good news for the fantasy values of the skill position players of the Jets—particularly Quincy Enunwa, who could be set for a Jarvis Landry type of role in Gase’s offense.

Sam Darnold | Panthers QB

Sam Darnold, Jets fall to the Patriots in season finale, 38-3.

Darnold was 16/28 for 167 yards, zero touchdowns, and zero interceptions, also adding a 28-yard rush. The Jets struggled to get going through the air or on the ground in the loss, as Deontay Burnett (5/73) was the only player to go for more than 28 receiving yards. Still, Darnold showed flashes of really strong play all year, completing 57.7% of his passes for 2,865 yards and a 17:15 touchdown-interception ratio in 13 games. New York will hire a new head coach sometime in the coming weeks, but Darnold—who doesn't turn 22 until June—will have plenty of upside as a late-round quarterback option in fantasy drafts next summer.

Sam Darnold | Panthers QB

Sam Darnold throws three touchdown in tough Week 16 loss.

Darnold was 24/35 for 341 yards and three touchdowns in the overtime loss to the Packers. The rookie quarterback was simply great throughout the game, making decisive and accurate throws while leading his team to 38 points. The scores were to Robby Anderson, Chris Herndon, and Elijah McGuire. Darnold gets his first crack at Bill Belichick and the Patriots to conclude his first NFL season, as he was out with a foot injury in their first matchup of the season. Despite the strong play as of late, he's a risky fantasy play in Foxboro.

Sam Darnold | Panthers QB

Sam Darnold throws two touchdowns in Saturday loss.

Darnold was 24/38 for 253 yards and two touchdowns along with six carries for 35 yards against the Texans. The rookie quarterback had a very strong showing, making good decisions while throwing the ball well both inside and outside the pocket. The first score was on a nice scramble up in the pocket before he found Robby Anderson in the back of the end zone, and the second score was on an Andre Roberts double-move in the end zone. Next up, Darnold stays at home to face the Packers. He's not a recommended fantasy option for fantasy championships, but it's good to see him play well in his first NFL season.

Sam Darnold | Panthers QB

Sam Darnold plays well in return to the lineup.

Darnold was 16/24 for 170 yards, one touchdown, and one interception along with four carries for ten yards in the Jets' Week 14 win against the Bills. The touchdown was a great seven-yard scramble in which Darnold crossed field and found Robby Anderson for a seven-yard score. Darnold helped lead the Jets to 14 fourth-quarter points in the 27-23 win, and it'll hopefully be a momentum-builder for the final three games of the season. The rookie quarterback left briefly with a foot injury, which was a concern considering he missed the last three games with a foot injury, but he returned and seemed fine. Darnold next faces the Texans on Saturday afternoon.

Sam Darnold | Panthers QB

Sam Darnold (foot) has returned to the game.

It is a bit surprising considering the Jets are 3-9 and their franchise quarterback had been out for a few weeks coming into the game, but hopefully he is OK and can finish things out.

Sam Darnold | Panthers QB

Sam Darnold leaves game with apparent foot injury.

Darnold limped to the locker room after his first series in his first game back from his three-game absence with a foot sprain. This obviously isn't a good sign for the rookie quarterback, who probably won't be back in the game considering the team will take a cautious approach with him. We'll update you as more information becomes available, but Josh McCown is now entering the game for the Jets.

Sam Darnold | Panthers QB

Sam Darnold (foot) was a full participant in today's practice.

Week 14 was the reported target return date for Darnold, and he looks to be ready to go to face the Bills on Sunday. We'll let you know if anything changes, but expect the rookie quarterback to be back in the lineup after missing the last three games. Darnold is not a fantasy option for the first week of the fantasy playoffs.

Sam Darnold | Panthers QB

Sam Darnold (foot) is officially inactive for Week 13.

The Jets are playing it safe with their rookie quarterback, and it’ll again be veteran Josh McCown under-center. Darnold is thought to have a great chance to play in Week 14.

Sam Darnold | Panthers QB

Sam Darnold (foot) is officially listed as questionable for Week 13.

Josh McCown, who was limited in yesterday's practice, is fully healthy and ready to play, so Darnold's status will be determined solely by his own health. He looks to have a real chance to play against the Titans, but the Jets are likely to exercise caution with their young franchise quarterback. The Jets do not play until 4:05 PM ET on Sunday, so Darnold's status might not be known until the earlier games have kicked off.

Sam Darnold | Panthers QB

Sam Darnold (foot) remained limited in today's practice.

Darnold says he's hopeful he can play Sunday against the Titans, and he looks to have a decent shot at playing. We'll see how the rookie quarterback is listed on the final Week 13 injury report when it's released sometime tomorrow.

Sam Darnold | Panthers QB

Sam Darnold (foot) was limited in today’s practice.

Darnold continues to make progress from his foot injury, and this is a good start to the week for him. He looks to have a chance to return this week, but a Week 14 is looking good for a potential return if not.

Sam Darnold | Panthers QB

Sam Darnold (foot) has been ruled out for Week 12.

Darnold wasn't expected to play against the Patriots, and this confirms it. Veteran Josh McCown will be under center again, but while he should fare much better than he did in the blowout loss to Buffalo before the bye, New York's signal-caller isn't a recommended fantasy option this weekend.

Sam Darnold | Panthers QB

Sam Darnold (foot) officially did not practice today.

Darnold was suited up for practice with a helmet and pads, but he did not actually participate in the session. It's still up in the air for now, but Josh McCown appears likely to make a second consecutive start this weekend against the Patriots. Darnold would probably do well to be listed as questionable when the final injury report is released on Friday.

Sam Darnold | Panthers QB

Sam Darnold (foot) has been ruled out for Week 10.

This was fully expected to happen with Josh McCown starting and Davis Webb being promoted from the practice squad to back him up. Darnold is week-to-week for now, but he might only miss one game with the Jets having a bye next week to give him more time to heal.

Sam Darnold | Panthers QB

Sam Darnold (foot) is officially listed as doubtful for Sunday.

Josh McCown is starting no matter what, but the Jets might use Darnold as the backup against the Bills. However, it's unlikely; and Darnold isn't a fantasy option either way.

Sam Darnold | Panthers QB

Sam Darnold has a "significant foot sprain" according to Manish Mehta of the NY Daily News.

This explains the protective boot the rookie quarterback is wearing. Mehta says Darnold is out this week against the Bills, which obviously isn't a surprise. This means veteran Josh McCown will be under-center for the Jets on Sunday, which probably knocks down the Bills D/ST down at least slightly. The foot injury could explain Darnold having the worst game of his NFL career to this point last week, and it is less than ideal that he's going to miss some time as he looks to progress throughout his rookie season. This is also bad news for Peyton Manning, who has been hoping a rookie will break his rookie interception record of 28. Darnold currently has 14 through nine games.

Sam Darnold | Panthers QB

Sam Darnold is wearing a protective boot on his right foot.

The rookie quarterback obviously isn't practicing today, and his status for Sunday against the Bills looks to be in jeopardy. We'll track Darnold's status throughout the week, but the very capable Josh McCown would take over as the Jets' starter if Darnold can't play.

Sam Darnold | Panthers QB

Sam Darnold throws four interceptions against the Dolphins.

Darnold was 21/39 for 229 yards and four interceptions in the Week 9 loss. It simply wasn't a good game for the rookie quarterback, and things might not get easier next week against Sean McDermott's Bills defense. The USC product just needs to show growth over the final seven games of the season, as it's going to be tough for the Jets to make a playoff run at 3-6. Darnold is only a fantasy option in dynasty leagues for now.

Sam Darnold | Panthers QB

Sam Darnold throws one touchdown in Jets' loss.

Darnold was 14/29 for 153 yards and one touchdown along with five carries for 55 yards in the Week 8 loss to the Bears. The rookie quarterback again connected with rookie tight end Chris Herndon for a touchdown. Through eight games, Darnold is on pace for 3,410 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 20 interceptions. Especially with his supporting cast very banged up, Darnold simply doesn't have enough to deliver consistent fantasy value right now.

Sam Darnold | Panthers QB

Sam Darnold turns the ball over four times against the Vikings.

Minnesota's defense hasn't been exceptional this season, but they have a lot of talent and were set to have a performance like this at some point. They put a lot of pressure on Darnold, who was 17/42 for 206 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions along with six carries for 18 yards and a touchdown; he also lost a fumble in the Week 7 loss. The rushing score was on a quarterback sneak. Darnold has another tough matchup with the Bears next week, so he's not a recommended streaming option for fantasy lineups.

Sam Darnold | Panthers QB

Sam Darnold throws two touchdowns in Jets' win.

Darnold played a strong and efficient game against the Colts, going 24/30 for 280 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. The scores were to Terrelle Pryor on a quick pass deep in Colts territory and a wide-open Chris Hendon on a pass down the left sideline for 32 yards. Darnold now has six touchdowns and two interceptions the last three weeks for the 3-3 Jets. The rookie quarterback is not a recommended fantasy option against the Vikings next week.

Sam Darnold | Panthers QB

Sam Darnold throws three touchdowns in Jets' win.

Darnold wasn't ultra efficient against the Broncos, but he played well at home to help the Jets notch their second win of the season. The rookie quarterback was 10/22 for 198 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception in the win, with all three scores coming over 20 yards—two to Robby Anderson, including a 76-yarder; and one to Terrelle Pryor. It was great to see the pinpoint accuracy on Darnold's deep balls, something he's done very well to start his NFL career. Darnold faces the Colts in Week 6.

Sam Darnold | Panthers QB

Sam Darnold throws one touchdown in Jets' loss.

Darnold avoided turnovers against Jacksonville, but the Jets offense couldn't get much going in the Week 4 loss. The rookie quarterback was 17/34 for 167 yards and a touchdown along with two carries for eight yards. Darnold is not a recommended QB1 fantasy option when the Jets face the Broncos in Week 5.

Sam Darnold | Panthers QB

Jets offense struggles in Thursday night loss to the Browns.

The passing offense of the Jets couldn't get much of anything going in Cleveland's first win since 2016, and Sam Darnold went 15/31 for 169 yards and two interceptions. Both interceptions came late in the game, with one coming on a ball that he forced after getting pressured and the other coming on a desperation deep attempt with under 20 seconds remaining. The stat line obviously isn't great, but Darnold again showed flashes and made good throws throughout the night. Darnold gets an extremely tough test at Jacksonville in Week 4, so he's not a recommended fantasy option even with a mini bye.

Sam Darnold | Panthers QB

Sam Darnold throws two interceptions in Week 2.

Darnold was 25/41 for 334 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions in the loss to the Dolphins, with the score coming on a 28-yard pass over the middle to Bilal Powell. The 300-yard performance makes him the youngest in NFL history to accomplish the feat (21 years, 103 days). Darnold is going to have some growing pains as a very young rookie quarterback, so he's difficult to trust in fantasy lineups. The Jets face the Browns this Thursday night.

Sam Darnold | Panthers QB

Sam Darnold bounces back from pick-six and shines in pro debut.

On Darnold's first NFL pass attempt he rolled out to the right on a design play and threw across the field for an easy pick-six by Lions defensive back Quandre Diggs. However, Darnold showed the poise he's been down for since his time at USC, bouncing back like nothing happened and going 16/20 the rest of the game. Overall, Darnold was 16/21 for 198 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. The first score was on a 41-yard deep ball to Robby Anderson, and the second was to Quincy Enunwa. Darnold and the 1-0 Jets face the Dolphins in Week 2.

Sam Darnold | Panthers QB

The Jets officially named Sam Darnold their starting quarterback.

Darnold will be under-center one week from tonight when the Jets face the Lions on Monday Night Football, and the former USC star will be the youngest starting quarterback (21 years, 97 days) in Week 1 since the NFL/AFL merger in 1970. Darnold immediately impressed throughout the summer and preseason, and his quick progression and readiness allowed the franchise to roll with their guy to start his NFL career. Josh McCown will be one of the league's best backups behind the rookie. Because the supporting cast isn't great, Darnold isn't a highly-reccomended QB1 option quite yet, but he's a solid QB2 option to open the year.

Sam Darnold | Panthers QB

Jets offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates: Sam Darnold is "progressing extremely fast."

Bates talked about "how easy the game is" for the rookie quarterback, adding that the team has not held anything back from Darnold, who has "owned the playbook." After playing very well through two preseason games and impressing in practice, Darnold is handling most of the first-team reps for the Jets. Right now, despite the presence of Teddy Bridgewater and Josh McCown, Darnold is the heavy favorite to start Week 1 for the Jets.

Sam Darnold | Panthers QB

Sam Darnold has officially agreed to his contract with the Jets.

It's a four-year deal worth $30.25 million with $20 million guaranteed. After missing a few Jets practices to start training camp, Darnold will now be thrown into the mix with Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater. Jets head coach Todd Bowles already said they'll get Darnold up to speed, and it might not take long for him to get some first-team reps. The team probably hopes Darnold plays so well that they can't keep him out of the lineup, but both McCown and Bridgewater are more than capable as the starting quarterback.

Sam Darnold | Panthers QB

Sam Darnold remains unsigned, is not at the first training camp practice.

Darnold and the Jets have yet to agree to a contract, so the rookie quarterback is not with the team as training camp gets underway. In what's expected to be a three-way competition between Darnold, Josh McCown, and Teddy Bridgewater, the rookie could fall behind quickly—especially with McCown playing well last season and Bridgewater reportedly looking great since he's arrived in New York. Hopefully Darnold gets signed soon so he can get on the field with his new teammates.

Sam Darnold | Panthers QB

The Jets have selected Sam Darnold with the third pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Considered by many as the top quarterback in the class, Darnold lands in the AFC East after the Browns and Giants passed on him with the first two picks of the draft. Darnold is only 20 years old and is seen as someone with the potential for a ton of growth, and the biggest thing he needs to focus on is cutting down on the turnovers (22 interceptions in two years at USC, nine lost fumbles last season). The Jets have Teddy Bridgewater and Josh McCown in the quarterback room already, and they will both be a great presence for Darnold. It's possible Darnold starts as a rookie, but we would expect Bridgewater or McCown to be under center for Week 1 for the Jets.
