Apple Reveals iPhone 12 Lineup: Four Models With 5G

Fans had to wait about a month longer than usual due to the impact of COVID-19, but Apple finally revealed their 2020 flagship smartphone lineup: iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max.

For those interested, the entire presentation can be watched below:

All four iPhone models will have 5G, and CEO Tim Cook continually referred to the changes—including a hardware redesign with flat edges similar to the iPhone 5—as a “new era” for iPhone.

Other major changes for the entire lineup are the new A14 Bionic chip, MagSafe technology for charging and accessories, and OLED displays. The Pro models in particular have stainless steel edges, a LiDAR Scanner, and Dolby Vision HDR for video recording.

In terms of size, the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro will be 6.1 inches, while the iPhone 12 Mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max will come in at 5.4 inches and 6.7 inches, respectively.

The non-Pro models have more of a traditional finish and will come in White, Black, Blue, Green, and (PRODUCT)RED. The Pro models have a shinier finish with the stainless steel and will be available in Silver, Graphite, Gold, and Pacific Blue.

Unfortunately, the new lineup doesn’t bring back Touch ID, which there was hope for considering the iPad Air (revealed last month) put the technology in the power button. COVID-19 was actually not even mentioned during Apple’s presentation, so those looking to upgrade should keep issues with Face ID in mind if they are often forced to wear a mask. Also, earphones and a power brick have been removed from all packaging, leaving a new USB-C to Lightning Cable cord as the only accessory other than the iPhone itself.

The iPhone 12 ($699) and iPhone 12 Pro ($999) will be available for pre-order on October 16 with an October 23 release. The iPhone 12 Mini ($699) and iPhone 12 Pro Max ($1,099) will be available for pre-order on November 6.
