Rumors have been swirling about potential Batman series coming to HBO Max, and one is becoming a reality. WarnerMedia announced that HBO has given a series commitment to a new drama series set in the Gotham City police department from Matt Reeves’ universe for the upcoming The Batman film. Boardwalk Empire creator Terence Winter and The Batman producer Dylan Clark will team with Reeves and Warner Bros. Television to create the new DC series.
The WarnerMedia press release reads in part:
The groundbreaking television series to be written by Winter is set in the world Reeves is creating for The Batman feature film and will build upon the motion picture’s examination of the anatomy of corruption in Gotham City, ultimately launching a new Batman universe across multiple platforms. The series provides an unprecedented opportunity to extend the world established in the movie and further explore the myriad of compelling and complex characters of Gotham. This marks the first television project for Reeves under his recently announced overall deal with the Warner Bros. Television Group.
Reeves adds, “This is an amazing opportunity, not only to expand the vision of the world I am creating in the film, but to explore it in the kind of depth and detail that only a longform format can afford — and getting to work with the incredibly talented Terence Winter, who has written so insightfully and powerfully about worlds of crime and corruption, is an absolute dream.”
A new Gotham City universe across multiple platforms is a smart move by WarnerMedia to take advantage of arguably its most popular overall character and setting in Batman and Gotham City. Expect a gritty, realistic, and drama-filled approach to be taken for the new show.
There has also been rumors of a Batman series featuring Ben Affleck, who was a major fan favorite in the role of Batman and Bruce Wayne, on HBO Max; but that might ultimately depend on how Zack Snyder’s Justice League performs when it is released next year.
The Batman is set to hit theaters in October 2021, and this new series could also release around that time.
