HBO Max To Finally Get 4K Content Starting With ‘Wonder Woman 1984’

HBO Max launched last May, but it shockingly has not had any 4K content yet. And because of the global pandemic shutting down movie theaters in the U.S. and abroad, Wonder Woman 1984 will be available from the platform on Christmas Day. Originally, Wonder Woman 1984 was not going to be released in 4K UHD; but—after many voiced their displeasure with the non-4K release—WarnerMedia is going to make it work. WW84 director Patty Jenkins just announced the news:

It’s good to hear Wonder Woman 1984 will now only be in 4K, and it will also be in the HDR 10, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos formats. Especially if you have the right television (i.e. a premium one, like an OLED), the difference will be noticeable compared to standard full HD.

This is a major positive development for the state of 4K content on HBO Max. Competitors like Netflix and Amazon Prime have a notable catalog of 4K content, but HBO Max’s massive library would be tough to top if they can make a sizable number of shows and movies available in UHD.

Keep in mind, there’s been a recent issue with the highly anticipated 4K release of Game of Thrones, as the digital version was not available to redeem in 4K UHD, angering many fans. This Wonder Woman 1984 news could mean shows like Game of Thrones will soon be available digitally (on both HBO Max and as the digital redemption for purchasing the physical version), which would be a considerable boost for HBO Max.

Wonder Woman 1984 will release both in theaters and via HBO Max (in the United States) on Christmas Day.
