Strengths
Mammoth overall size. Long arms and thick legs. Powerful hands that don’t allow defenders out of his grasp. Intelligent. Calls out what he sees before the play. Great field awareness. Knows his assignment. Keeps a solid base in pass protection with light/active feet for his size. Very physical. Finisher that consistently drives people to the ground. Seeks work on the second level. Loves to get in on the action. Has the skillset and size to be a bulldozer at guard. Can lead the way as puller. Scary blocker in space when he picks up a head of steam. Times up the snap to get out of his stance. Experienced inside and outside.
Weaknesses
Lacks reaction quickness to stop speed rushers on the edge. Will be pushed back if lengthy power rushers get inside. Doesn’t have as much anchor power as he should at his size. Hand placement is a little grabby and could cause holding penalties at the next level.
NFL comparison
Brandon Brooks – He doesn’t always seem like it because of his plus athleticism, but Brooks is a massive 335 lbs., and Cody Ford should develop a similar game on the interior.
Conclusion
Overall, Cody Ford is a big offensive lineman with intelligence, physicality, and good feet for his size. Some still view him as a tackle, but I think Ford’s best chance of turning into a Pro Bowl player will come at guard.
